A number of these studies and publications have helped to lay the scientific foundation for the struggle for a culture of peace.

This interview was conducted in the city of Santiago de Compostela, on the occasion of the completion of the World Forum on Education, Research and Culture of Peace in December 2010.

How do you evaluate the process of this International Decade for Culture of Peace?

When we did the action culture of peace program knew that some of the member states of the United Nations were not really agree with the idea. Among the proposed objectives included: “should be encouraged and strengthened partnerships between the various agents for the global movement for a culture of peace among agents; civil society should participate in local, regional and national levels”. We know it is very important the role that civil society has in his hands and not lose hope you can make it.

What happened to the World Report on the Culture of Peace, which developed during 10 years?

The report was delivered by Ambassador of Bangladesh to the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon to mid-2010. with the help of the Culture of Peace Foundation copies were printed, were carried to New York and placed on the desks of the delegates during the debate. The Embajdador of Spain said during the debate and stated in the original transcript “through civil society in this report.” It is the maximum we could achieve.

Can we talk about peace in the world today?

No, we have to change the world. You have to make radical changes in the world. Many people believe you need to change states to achieve a culture of peace. Personally I think we should take another path. To make the culture of peace, to achieve peace networks, or cities of peace, we must make the ONU and act charge is made.

What conclusions can be obtained after this process?

First you have to realize in the world of the need for a culture of peace. Many people now say we should replace the culture of the world for a culture of peace. And I think that states should I repair the errors.

ut people want peace, and governments should do what the people want…

I do not think that, I think the culture of the world is always based on the power of the state.

What will the future for our children?

The future will be very difficult for the global economy will crash. In the 80s saw what was happening in the Soviet Union, how those problems occurred. Many of these problems I see here now. When the global economy crashes we will have a time when we will see a new system, the old system will disappear, states, corporations, there will be a time when there will be changes. People ask me when will change, when everything will crash; My answer is very simple: very soon. We have very little time to prepare. We must work quickly when it occurs.

What has changed over the last decade that have worked in the Decade of Culture of Peace Report?

First of all the consciousness of people. I think there is now more awareness against war and for peace. And that’s very important.

What regions of the world must do more to promote peace?

My favorite country is Brazil. Is very strong in the work for a culture of peace, I worked in Sao Paulo, Santos, and I see many cities where there are many people working hard for a culture of peace. Overall in Latin America is very strong culture of peace. Stronger than in the north, because there prevails the culture of war. If you listen to Evo Morales in Bolivia he also speaks of a culture of peace.

And what happens in other regions, for example in Southeast Asia?

Not much, I think yes Latin America is growing. There is also great potential in Africa, but not now. The problem in Europe or North America is that there are many individuals who believe that the system is adequate. People say to me, David, are you happy with Obama? And my answer is no. Obama is a good man, but he does his job. And what is the job of U.S. president? Being commander of the empire. That’s their job.

Finally, what do you think of social media, and youth as a contribution to peace?

You see me here on this forum 2010 with many people at my table. People from various countries like Brazil, Colombia, India, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Pakistan, the Philippines, several countries in Europe and the United States. The new generation is the global generation. It is very important to work with them face to face, not through facebook. And that an activity like this Global Forum is very important, because we can all be together.
